Dr. David Price, a pulmonary and critical care doctor from Weill Cornell Medical Center in NYC explains how NOT to contract COVID-19 and what to do if you believe you have it. Plain information without fear and hysteria. The video is nearly an hour long and worth your time. Here are the main takeaways: 1) The way this disease is contracted is from hands to face contact. “Almost exclusively from your hands to your face so it’s either into your eyes, into your nose, or into your mouth.”2) If you keep your hands clean and don’t touch your face the only way to get COVID-19 from an infected person is to be in sustained contact with the person for over 15 minutes in an unprotected environment such as a closed room where you are not wearing a mask.3) The overwhelming majority of people getting COVID-19 is by physically touching someone with the virus or who will develop the virus in the next 2 days, and then touching your face. 4) Knowing your hands are clean and not touching your face will protect you over 99% of the time. STRATEGY (“KNOW THE RULES”) 1) Wash your hands throughout the day. If you touch a surface like a door handle or shopping cart handle sanitize or wash your hands. If you can clean the surfaces you have to touch do so. Use your elbows and shoulders to open doors. 2) “You have to start psychologically working on the connection between your hands and your face.”–Dr. Price We touch our face more than we realize. Become aware and stop. Dr. Price recommends wearing a mask. Not a medical mask but a barrier that will remind you not to touch your face. MY NOTE: Use common sense here. If you have a full face mask on you may not want to walk into your bank or 7-11. You’re going to make an already nervous populace even more nervous. 3) “The general population has zero need for an N95 mask. Zero. Front line medical personnel need them.”–Dr. Price 4) Distance yourself from people when you’re out. OTHER INTERESTING OR IMPORTANT THINGS TO KNOW 1) Most transmission is from family member to family member. Sick family members should be isolated as much as possible. If the sick member can use a separate bathroom do so. 2) Don’t go to the hospital because you have COVID-19. Go because you have shortness of breath. If you don’t have shortness of breath the hospital may send you home to free up space and care for more serious cases. 3) Medical personnel wearing the proper protection and following the proper protocol have little chance of getting COVID-19. The doctors and nurses who contracted COVID-19 did so weeks ago because they didn’t have the proper protective gear or they spent a long period of time with a person they didn’t realize had the virus. 4) You can get COVID-19 from 15 years of age and up. The younger you are the better chance of survival you have. 5) The symptoms are exactly the same for everyone: Cough, body ache, sore throat, fever. 6) Don’t use ibuprofen if you think you have COVID-19. Use acetaminophen to reduce fever. 7) Social distancing will “flatten the curve”. People will relax “the rules” and there will be a spike, then the curve will flatten again. Social distancing will go for months to a year. 8) There is a male predominance with COVID-19. 9) Pregnant nurses need to screen patients, wear the proper protective gear and keep hands clean. “There is nothing unique to the pregnant population.”–Dr. Price 10) LEARN THE RULES (wash your hands, sanitize surfaces, DON’T TOUCH YOUR FACE, you can go out but practice “social distancing”) AND YOU DO NOT HAVE TO LIVE IN FEAR. ——————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————
For today’s workout pause on the box for 1-second then come up. If you can do a full pistol without a box, with the pause at the bottom, do so.
