Let's talk knees for a moment. Most people have them. Some are better than others. The majority of active people are going to have "knee issues" at some point. "Issues" can range from irritation through severe pain and damage. We have made the observation that our particular knee pain was worse before we crossfitted. Building the muscle surrounding the knee protects the joint. We suggest reading the following articles to best understand what can cause knee problems and how to avoid them. The articles should also make one do lots of research and get many opinions before having surgery, in the event of knee damage. Don't rush in to go under the knife. The articles mention keeping weight under control to help the joints, but don't mention seeking alternative means for promoting healing such as accupuncture, active release therapy and chiropractic, all of which have helped us at one time or another. The articles also don't mention proper nutrition to reduce inflammation in the body, but they should have.
The articles also mention that many active people injure their knees by making "sharp cuts and turns" while moving. Question: If this is so prevalent is it possible humans were not made to "cut" or "turn sharply" while running? Just asking.
