CROSSFIT SUFFOLK: Powered By SPARTAN PERFORMANCE

Somebody needs the NEAT he used to get from coaching 10 hours a day. NEAT, in the fitness world, is an acronym for Non-exercise activity thermogenesis (NEAT) is the energy expended for everything we do when we’re not sleeping or exercising (hence the “non-exercise”). Yup!

8 COMMON CROSSFIT MOBILITY PROBLEMS (AND HELPFUL WAYS TO FIX THEM)

NEW YORK STATE RELEASE NEW PHASE 4 GUIDELINES; GYMS, MALLS NOT INCLUDED

This is beyond frustrating and for us, completely unnecessary. The above headline reads, “Gyms, Mall Not Included” but in the actual report they say “may not be included” and they offer no guidance whatsoever. The report also goes on to say that there will not be a Phase 5. The government is basically saying “We don’t know. We’ll let you know”. They did mention that Phase 4 is expected to start a week from now but that may have been for western New York and Upstate. If they were talking about Long Island as well then it’s possible my assumed target date of July 8th could still be a possibility. We’ll see.

Ladies and gentlemen, that there may be a delay in the opening of gyms when Phase 4 starts is pure bovine scatology and I’ll tell you why.

Much of the fear is apparently based on an incident that occurred in South Korea back in February when the world was just becoming aware of the CoronaVirus. There was an instructor dance class in the “hot zone” of South Korea where 30 instructors were getting certified in a 4-hour class. 8 of those instructors tested positive for CoronaVirus sometime after the class and they went on to cause the infection of 112 other people, some of who took part in an hour-long class with 5-22 people inside a 625 square foot training area. Those people went on to infect family members. Read THIS, THIS and THIS, to learn more.

Other than this story out of South Korea I could not find anything resembling science or evidence that demonstrates that gyms are “dangerous” for the spread of the virus.

Back in February nobody in most of the world had a good handle on what we would be facing. We are much more aware now.

Our gym does not include machines that seem to be the main concern with “authorities” that cannot point to a case where someone got sick from contacting a machine that was used by an infected person. We don’t have much in the way of machines and our equipment is easy to wipe down.

Our training area is approximately 3200 square feet. That’s over 5 times the size of the training area in the South Korea example.

We’ve NEVER had a regular class with anywhere near 30 people at once. Social distancing was never an issue for us on a normal basis except some Saturday mornings. This is easy to manage.

95% of the membership comes in ready to train. About 5% need a changing room to put their workout clothes on. About 3% of the membership uses the showers. The point is in large gyms the bathrooms, showers and change rooms seem to be a topic of concern. Our numbers in this regard are statistically insignificant.

Ventilation, especially during the summer months, is a non-issue as we keep the bay door and the regular door open and we use fans.

We’ve always had disinfectant to wipe down surfaces and equipment. Obviously that will not only continue but will be increased.

We traditionally have had a responsible membership. Our members know not to train if they are sick. Going forward we will be checking everybody’s temperature (non-contact).

We believe keeping our members safe is fairly simple and we’ve always kept that as a primary goal…and we’re good at it. We’re sure our members will be on the same page regarding keeping the gym safe. For nearly 12 years we’ve run a safe and clean training environment. All we are going to do is improve on an already excellent record!
