Stretch Before A Run Or Don't–A Study Finds It May Not Matter, Injury-Wise "Researchers discovered that stretching neither caused injury nor helped avoid it, compared with the no-stretch group."–Jeannine Stein, LA Times
Doctors Warn About Children Overtraining In Mixed Martial Arts "It's a matter of knowing when enough is enough and not overtraining"–Dr. Jeremy Frank
I'm disturbed by the fear mongoring that the media loves to engage in. Sure, children can get hurt while practicing mixed martial arts, but they can be hurt doing any activity "too much". To his credit Dr. Frank makes this claim of other sports as well. The LA Times would rather focus on MMA.
The funny thing is kids have been in boxing, wrestling, judo and karate classes for ions and it was never a problem. Apparently now when you mix the disciplines together it becomes dangerous. How exactly does that happen? This is much ado about nothing.
The LA Times would serve us better by doing a story on the children who don't do any physical activity. More children will suffer from lack of activity than from mixed martial arts training. I have no concern about children overtraining. In fact, an overtrained child would make me feel better about society. I have serious concerns about undertrained children. I have concerns about children who grow up without having enough exercise, without ever placing themselves in a position where they could receive a sports related injury.
