Children Grow Weaker As Computers Replace Outdoor Activity

"Children are becoming weaker, less muscular and unable to do physical tasks that previous generations found simple, research has revealed."–Denis Campbell

Taming Nature, Then Man  "Part of that pro-agriculture myth was that “no one chose to remain nomadic,” said Scott, but in fact farming for millennia just supplemented foraging, and did not replace it.

A permanent move to farming also brought increased mortality rates, smaller bodies, bone and teeth deformities, and iron deficiencies that hit women hardest. Cultivated plants were more reliable, but they were less nutritious too. Gone also were the complex sources of calories obtained by foraging, replaced by a diminished variety of grains."Corydon Ireland, Harvard Gazette

Kids are wimpy. They don’t play outside. The only structured physical activity that they do get is in PE class which is only 2x per week for 40 minutes each time. We have monkey bars at my school and we do rope climbing in PE classes however the % of kids that actually choose to play on the monkey bars and who can actually hold their own body weight up on the rope (not to mention the few that can actually climb) is disturbingly low. Kids are afraid of everything, to fail, to try, to be uncomfortable. They don’t know how to “push” themselves even in something as simple as stretching. Many students complain that “it hurts” as the try to stretch. Jogging two laps around the small gym that we have is torture and if I even think to ask them to jog to an entire 3 minute song……forget it……..the entire class all of a sudden has asthma.
When I ask what they do at home, many of them don’t go out, even in the nice weather. I don’t know if the parents or caregivers are too busy but this is the health of the children we are talking about. If anyone could spend a day in my classes you would never be able to believe your eyes. I still can’t believe what I see sometimes. :-/
