THE 2016 CROSSFIT OPEN

The 2016 CrossFit Open begins on February 28th.  Registration has begun.  You can click HERE to register or for more information.  If you have not done the Open or you have no idea what I’m talking about then allow me to address your concerns or enlighten you.  The CrossFit Games take place in July.  The athletes that make it to the Games go through two other phases first: The Open and Regionals.  It all starts with the Open.

The Open is a 5-week process.  It can be done by anyone.  There is one workout a week for 5 weeks.  The Open can be done at a participating CrossFit affiliate or you can video your performance and do it from virtually anywhere.  The Open has an Rx’d (as prescribed) as well as a Scaled version of each workout.

Why would you do the Open?

If you plan on being a competitive CrossFit athlete then the answer is obvious.  What if you don’t give a rat’s hairy backside about competing or competitions in general?

This is an even better question!

There are several reasons to compete in the Open.  This is just another level of leaving your comfort zone.  You’ll be doing the workouts from the Open anyway, as part of your regular workouts, but if you’re participating in the Open you’ll have a judge assigned to you, counting and watching your every move, solely focused on you.  This just adds to the pressure for some people.  The knowledge that you are participating in a competition also adds to the pressure.  Your score will be placed on the CrossFit Games Leaderboard for all to see.  This adds to the pressure.  Why would you want added pressure to an already intense workout?  This “pressure” elevates your “game”.  You will improve.  It doesn’t matter what level of athlete you are–you will improve.  We have seen it over and over again.

IT’S FUN!  Competing with your fellow athletes is fun.  Sharing the experience with your teammates, going through the “battle” together makes this a fun experience.  Nobody that went through the Open ever regretted the experience.  Most are glad they did it.  With each passing year we get more athletes than the previous year.  This isn’t because anyone had a bad time.

Your concerns:

Cost: $20.00..This is the cheapest competition fee known to mankind.

You’re not “competitive”:  Sure you are.  You compete against at least 1 person every day.  Yourself.  Here’s your chance to see how your development stacks up against thousands of people worldwide.  You don’t need to be a superstar.  Don’t forget there is a Scaled Division.

You’re concerned about how you’ll look on the Leaderboard:  Quite honestly, nobody cares unless you are going to Regionals.  I do the Open every year and I cannot recall what place I have come in during any year.  The subject rarely comes up.  We’re having too much fun with the process to be caught up in the details.

So there it is.  What questions do you have?—George

    Good idea John!

I checked…nothing has been released for 2016. Last year it was released in the middle of February.

John’s recommendation to take the judges course is on point! It gives one a deeper understanding of the movement standards and makes for better judging. Even if you never judge the course is worth your while for the movement standards education.
