CROSSFIT SUFFOLK: Powered By SPARTAN PERFORMANCE

CrossFit Suffolk/Spartan Performance was well represented at the 2015 Northeast Masters Throwdown on Saturday at Shoreline CrossFit in Branford, Connecticut!  We had 6 athletes competing, 1 Level 2 Coach coaching and 14 supporters cheering us on for one of the largest teams at the event!

Here’s how we did:

Amie-13th (Women 40-44)  Super-tough division…women had to use the 24kg kettlebell for swings in one event!  Amie PR’d during the Speed Clean Ladder with a 125 lbs. Clean!

Cindy-4th (Women 50-54)  Cindy was amazing, finishing near the top of her division despite being in pain from a quad injury!

Beth-2nd (Women 55-60)  Beth got to the podium!  Beth also Pr’d with a 95 lbs. Clean.  YEAH Beth!!

Al-25th (Men 40-44) Another stacked, tough division.  Like Amie, Cindy and Beth, this was Al’s first competition.  Al Pr’d with a 195 lbs. Clean!

John-5th (Men 45-49) For the second year in a row John finished near the top of the division.  John was tied for first in Event 2, the 500 meter row.  John’s row time was a cool 1:32.4!  John came in fourth in WOD 4 and was tied for 4th in WOD 1.

George-14th (Men 50-54) This was my 3rd time competing at this event and I have a blast every time!  Clearly, I need to work on my row!  The 500 meter row was the second WOD and my 1:51:7 time earned me last place in this event.  Of 23 competitors I was the only one to row above 1:47:5!  Competition is a great way to have your weaknesses exposed!  I finished tied for 10th in the Speed Clean Ladder where I PR’d with a 195 lbs. Clean, 8th place in WOD 3 and 11th in WOD 4.  Guess what I’ll be working on!?!?

The 2015 Northeast Masters Throwdown was a great experience for me and Lisa.  This was the first time we had to coach 3 women 40 years old or older and this was the biggest group of competitors we had at this event.  It’s humbling watching people with full-time jobs and family responsibilities train for an event and then compete at a competition that attracts athletes from an entire region of the country.  One of the biggest fears humans have is the fear of looking bad.  Nobody wants the embarrassment of “failing” in front of other competitors as well as friends and family.  It takes courage to compete.  These events are individual “sports” which is to say your performance is entirely dependent on you.  As the athletes got closer to competition day the Resistance inside them grew.  The “Resistance” is the force that tries to get you not to go through with the competition.  The Resistance is sometimes a voice in your head coming up with excuses on why you really shouldn’t do the event.  Sometimes the Resistance is manifested as illness or injury.  It takes courage to over-ride Resistance.  We’re extremely proud of our competitors for committing to the competition, preparing for it and then going through with it and doing well.–George

Thank you to everyone who came out to watch and cheer us on and thanks for the kind comments and well wishes! Events like this prove that the best part of Crossfit is the community, and Crossfit Suffolk has the best community!
    Special thanks to:

George who was more concerned about coaching than competing ( I think he spent more energy cheering and coaching than in any WOD).

Lisa who’s expertise is priceless and brought out the best in us all.

Jane: For just being the awesome person she is.

Just want to thank everyone for all your support and encouragement over the weekend and throughout the last few months…. You are all special people and I am very lucky to be a part of this big family…. Special thanks to George and Lisa for all you have done for me over the last year… You have changed my life and made me realize I can still be an athlete at 51 yrs old …

It truly was a fabulous weekend and so inspiring watching everyone. John and Bill are a riot together. Cindy pushed through the pain. Amie swung that 53# kettlebell like she owned it. George’s form was an example for all. Beth has to be so proud finishing in 2nd place. Al had to use a 55# d/b and that is about 1/3 of his body weight and he never quit. Lisa was an awesome coach and videographer. And it was a blast hanging with everyone that came to watch and cheer.

The only thing that could have made it better – LAMB BALLS!

My daughter asked me what else did I win besides the need to no longer doubt myself. This is what I won – I was coached by two amazing people, George and Lisa who helped me get to the point that I actually felt I was able to compete. I am part of a crossfit box that has the best support on the planet. People drove two hours to watch and support us. I get to be part of a group that is supportive and helpful and always help push not just me, to get better at what we do there. Who cannot be inspired by Cindy who did the workout in agony, but pushed through, Al, Amie, Cindy & Bill who have not competed before but went for it, John H making the rowing machine literally travel, Bill doing a backwards somersault after dropping the bar on the clean ladder and jumped right up, George who had the best form on the thrusters, Al and Amie who hit a PR on the clean ladder and so much more. Who would have thought at 57 years old I would be competing? Not me ever!! I have everyone at Crossfit Suffolk to thank for that. Thank you all so much for helping a fat old lady get fit and feel younger!!!!
