We’re big fans of the Pistol and other one-legged squat variations for balancing strength and control on both sides of the body evenly. Another reason we like the Pistol is for those who do obstacle races like the upcoming Spartan Super. When running on a hills or mountain trails, especially on the way down, you will find yourself having to balance on one leg at various and unexpected moments. We never appreciated the Pistol as much as when we found ourselves having to perform one, completely unscheduled, on a rocky Killington Mountain “trail” during the Spartan Beast.—George
