    I’m a day late, but I would agree with the benefits of meditation, I try to keep up a daily practice. It is hard work though, it is surprisingly difficult to quiet the mind – so consistent practice is key!

    Spot on!

    The fact that it is difficult to quiet the mind is why it is beneficial to meditate!

    If more people realized that meditation is an outstanding practice and not something religious or mystical more people would practice.

    I find it useful during metcons. When I’m breathing hard I’ll try to slow my breathing instead of focusing on how difficult the workout is. It ALWAYS helps!

    On days when I’m not running around like a madman if I can get 10 minutes to meditate I feel better for the entire day.

    I’m willing to bet most who read this blog are wondering what meditation has to do with performance or fitness, but performance of the mind has everything to do with performance of the body.

    Oh my goodness so very true! I just spent the entire day in a workshop dedicated to healing and meditation. Powerful stuff!! It’s definitely something that takes dedication and practice. I feel it gives me a vision for my day..goals to accomplish., etc

    George – I most definitely incorporate my meditation practice into my workouts, at least I have been trying to more so lately. It is interesting to hear how you focus on your breathing to quiet the mind. In the type of meditation I practice, my teacher emphasizes equanimity – to just be the observer of what is happening in the body without reacting to it. So during my workouts I try to just observe [as if I am detaching from] what is going on instead of mentally crying about it. I can do it for very short periods of time, but hopefully with practice that time will start to increase : )

    Good to hear Jade!

    I don’t discuss it often but training for CrossFit and training in martial arts are very similar for me. One, at its simplest form is for fitness, the other for sport or self-protection. The deeper purpose of CrossFit and martial arts is discovering who you are and mastering yourself. Meditation isn’t an esoteric ritual as much as it is an exercise to master your mind.

    Equanimity is a worthy goal, but i believe it starts with focusing on and controlling the breath. The first exercise anyone can do to approach a state of equanimity is to become aware of the their own breathing so they can deepen their relaxation. It’s the quickest, easiest way to focus “inward”.

    It’s interesting that you used the phrase, “as if I am detaching from”. I have long believed that the top CrossFitters, besides being in fantastic shape, are the ones who can “detach” from their own pain, discomfort and fatigue to “push through” where most others would slow down or stop. They have that natural ability to NOT feel sorry for themselves. Perhaps they achieve equanimity without realizing there is such a thing.
