It was nice to hear from everybody who did MURPH in the last 3 days! We had at least two PR’s (personal record) and several first-timers who did more than I thought they would. They probably did more than THEY thought they could.

Congratulations all! This was a tough time to do “MURPH”.

I’ve had numerous requests to open the gym before receiving the official go-ahead. Some were in jest and some were quite serious. Concepts like “The Underground Gym” and the “Speak Easy Gym” have been bandied about. While this has been entertaining for me and your enthusiasm has forced me to contemplate going “outlaw” the reality is we cannot. The police in other jurisdictions are issuing citations to gym owners. There are videos and news stories should you care to do your own research. A bar in Patchogue made the news yesterday as people waiting for take-out were offered the option to step into the bar and people began hanging out a little longer than just getting their take-out order. In the gym cases the owners kept their members at social distancing standards and had cleaning protocols and supplies in place. It didn’t matter. The bar apparently was relaxed in their efforts to maintain social distance.

Whether you agree or disagree with the above scenarios they all had one thing in common: they were brought to the attention of local authorities (and their respective governors) by people who made a decision to call the police. Whether the police or other town officials want to be involved doesn’t matter. Once a call is made action has to be taken. Once an action is taken summonses are involved, fines, possibly a loss of town permits, and possibly attorney fees. Things that are inconvenient but easily avoided.

It hasn’t happened to any of us, to the best of my knowledge, but some of my law enforcement friends have told me they receive numerous calls every day about people not wearing masks or maintaining social distance guidelines. People have called on neighbors working out in their own backyard. Most of the officers just speak to the people getting called on. My point is there are people who have nothing better to do than to mind your business. On your property you should be alright but if a neighbor calls on us it will be expensive for us, possibly too expensive.

The best we can do is hope we are included in the June 13th opening of Long Island.
