HOW TO RELEASE YOUR PSOAS

Understanding and visualizing the position of this muscle should help you appreciate the relationship of the psoas to the function of the trunk/spine, pelvis, and extremities.  It is involved in everything!  As soon as I began to respect the stress and excessive loads that I was placing on my psoas (there are two, one on each side), my groin strain went away and so did my back and SI pain.  As I work with clients with back, pelvic, hip and SI pain, a psoas release is one of the first steps toward decreasing tension and moving toward healthy tissues!“–Susan McLaughlin, Physical Therapist, Align Integration and Movement

GET YOUR ASS IN THE WATER AND OTHER THOUGHTS ON HARD WORK
-by Derby City CrossFit (Louisville, KY) Member, EA Duncan

Learning things is hard. Do the work… Never try to look cool and learn something at the same time. You must have an awkward phase. All of us would like to skip that awkward phase. That is not how it works. Here is how it works: Get your ass in the water. Swim like me.”

-Ta-Nehisi Coates

After I found out I passed the bar exam (also known as the best day of my life thus far) I made a point to email a professor who always went above and beyond the call of duty to make sure she simplified a complicated subject of the law. When I went to sit for the exam I was actually happy to see an essay on that subject most would dread because she had me so prepared. She wrote back “Congratulations! You did all the hard work, though.” It remains one of the most gratifying light bulb moments of my (long) student life. She was right. She offered me the tools, but I actually took them and learned how to use them and applied what I’d learned.

CrossFit has a lot of “lead you to the water” components but ultimately you have to make the decision to get your ass in the water and swim. You’ve got Coaches who genuinely want to see you get better. You’ve got class friends who are hoping you to show up. Whether you even realize it or not, you’ve got a huge community beyond the walls of the gym that is excited about your progress. There are endless amounts of articles and videos if you want to learn more about almost any CrossFit skill. The learning you’re going to have to do to progress? It’s going to be awkward. Don’t worry about trying to look cool. Take the tools offered and come learn. And like Coates said in what may be my new favorite quote, all of us would like to skip that awkward phase. All of us would like to go straight to being good at every single skill. That is not how it works.

Here is how it works: come in, do the hard work. Leave, keep up the good work. Progress, reach goals, hit PRs and be able to say Congratulations to yourself. Get your ass in and swim with us, the water’s fine.

    Yes Corryn!

The fact that some of our members fall victim to spontaneous human combustion during workouts is a problem. It makes cleaning the walls and the equipment so difficult. We hope to have a solution this week.

Thanks for pointing it out though!
