The 2019 CrossFit Open starts this week.

On Thursday night at 8 pm the first of 5 weeks of competition workouts will be released. This is a competition that, while being held the world over, is done in your own “box” (gym) or any other official affiliate.

If you register for the the Open you will do the Open workout sometime between Thursday night and Monday night. While doing the workout you’ll have a judge assigned who will count your reps and make sure you’re meeting the movement standards and following the rules of the competition as well as the individual event. Your score will be documented and you will enter your score on the CrossFit Games webpage where you’ll be able to track how you are doing compared to the other competitors in your category in the entire universe.

We will be making the Open workout the workout of the day (WOD) every Friday for the next 5 Fridays. If you cannot do the Open workout on Friday you’ll have the opportunity to do it on Saturday, Sunday or Monday. The Open workouts include a scaled division. Also, there are age categories where the workouts are modified for teens and Masters 55 years old and older.

What are the benefits of competing in the Open?

If your plans are to be a competitive CrossFit athlete and you aspire to get to the Games you have to compete in the Open.

For everyone else, registering for the Open and doing the workouts where you have to be officially judged and have your score entered where it will be visible to the world provides the sort of pressure that will enhance your “game” as a crossfitter and raise your level of performance, regardless of what level you’re at before the Open. We have seen this over and over again. Don’t take my word for it. Ask those who have competed in the Open previously.

It’s fun and exciting to compete, with “higher stakes”, along side your friends at the gym! You do not need to consider yourself a “competitive athlete” in order to compete. You are a competitive athlete constantly competing against yourself. The CrossFit Open is a learning experience for everyone who does it. This alone makes it worth it.
