LIFE AFTER THE "ELECTRONIC ARMAGEDDON"

Imagine, if you will, life without electronics.  That's what I was doing recently after watching the National Geographic special, Electronic Armageddon.  In the event of an Electro-Magnetic Pulse all electronics would be fried.  Cars, computers, anything that runs on electricity would be destroyed. There are two ways an EMP could happen, man-made with a high altitude nuclear explosion or from a solar storm of epic proportion.  An EMP would do no harm to any life form, but the aftermath would be beyond devastating.

Based on "Katrina" we have a good idea of what would occur.  The EMP would be "Katrina" on a country wide, super-grand scale.  There are many self-reliant people in the United States, but there are many who will wait for someone else or the government to save them.  That, of course, won't happen.

Those accustomed to country living, hunting, fishing, growing their own food and obtaining their own well water, would probably fair best.

What of city and suburban dwellers?

What would happen to the unfit?

Think about it.  All transportation will be done by foot and bicycle and to a lesser extent by horseback.  This is going to require a degree of fitness that many Americans are far removed from.  This is going to require the kind of mental toughness not widely found.

We would have to carry our "stuff".  We may have to carry a friend or family member.  We would have to carry those unable to transport themselves.

We would have to hunt and fish and farm.  We would have to find a safe and working water source.  We would have to obtain medicine.

We would have to protect ourselves from roaming packs of predatory members of society.  We would have to protect friends and neighbors who are unable to protect themselves.

No ATMs, no trucks to transport goods across the country, no transportation for emergency personnel, no communication beyond your local area, no calling for help, no news!

We would go from the present time to how life was before electricity in an instant.

I  imagined the rebuilding would be done by those physically, mentally and spiritually strong.  How would the weak and unfit contribute?  If you're reading this you're probably in good physical condition, but what of those you know who are not physically fit?  How will they get around?  How will they contribute?  How many will wait for someone else to do for them?  Provide for them?  Protect them?

These are horrible thoughts, but the situation doesn't have to be "armeggedon".  It could be any catastrophic scenario.  The strong and well conditioned will have much better odds at survival.  The weak, the unfit and the sick will have to rely on help and hope.

Help and hope are poor options during catastrophic events.  Help won't be around when you need it and hope is a poor strategy.

Stay strong and well conditioned as if your life depends on it.  One day it might.

  1. My car has been dead for over a week. I’ve been bicycling to work and recreation. People look at me like I’m nuts when they either see or hear I’m using pedal-power for transportation! But I think of it as only a marginal inconvenience. But then again, a 30-40 minute ride to work is cake for a CFter 😉 It’s even served a pretty damn good warmup for the gym before shift!!!
