We are coming to the end of Police Memorial Week 2010.  In honor of police officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice we are doing "Randy" as the workout of the day.  Randy Simmons was a member of the top SWAT Team in the country–LAPD SWAT.  Randy joined the LAPD in 1981 and became a member of the SWAT Team in 1988.  Randy was 51 years old when he was killed in 2008.

From the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund:

 On average, one law enforcement officer is killed in the line of duty somewhere in the United States every 53 hours. Since the first known line-of-duty death in 1792, nearly 19,000 U.S. law enforcement officers have made the ultimate sacrifice.

In 2009 116 officers were killed in the line of duty.  As of May 14 of this year 61 officers have been killed in the line of duty.

Somebody killed a policeman today
And a part of America died…
A piece of our country he swore to protect
Will be buried with him at his side.
The beat that he walked was a battlefield, too,
Just as if he had gone off to war;
Though the flag of our nation won't fly at half-mast
To his name they will add a gold star.
The suspect that shot him will stand up in court
With counsel demanding his rights,
While a young widowed mother must work for her kids
And spend many long, lonely nights.
Yes, somebody killed a policeman today…
Maybe in your town or mine,
While we slept in comfort behind our locked doors
A cop put his life on the line.
Now his ghost walks the beat on a dark city street,
And he stands at each new rookie's side;
He answered the call… of himself gave his all,
And a part of America died…
