AND NOW FOR SOMETHING TOTALLY DIFFERENT…

By George Demetriou

C'mon…What the…?…Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse–presenting…(start drum roll now)–Chair Aerobics!!!!!

We thought it was bad when personal trainers were offering pearls of wisdom such as, "women shouldn't lift a weight greater than 3 lbs."  Now we have "Chair Aerobics"–exercising while sitting.  We suppose asking the participants to stand while they move their 48 oz. dummbells is asking too much?

Hey Chair Aerobics trainers did you stop and think about one of the reasons your clients are deconditioned is their fat ass is in a chair for much of the day?  Wouldn't it be better to get them up and moving around?

We train or have trained two athletes that need a wheelchair to get around.  One has a crushed pelvis and one is paralyzed from the chest down.  One of the first things we did while training them was GET THEM OUT OF THEIR CHAIRS and they need a chair!  The exercises that they did, or do, from their chairs involved moving heavy weight and their own bodyweight.

Don't get me wrong.  If a person absolutely needs to be in a chair then that's the way it has to be.  Those confined to working out while in a chair can eventually escalate the amount of weight or work or both, like anyone else.  I take issue with having a person exercise from a chair because they are mentally uncomfortable with standing.

Is it any wonder that despite all the advances in fitness and nutrition information that we live in a society that is witness to a staggering increase in obesity and chronic health problems?

Should we take fitness advice from someone who makes a profit from selling the medication you need to take?
